Engineering Manager, MAAS – Join Canonical, a leading provider of open source software and operating systems. Location: Work‑from‑anywhere position available in EMEA or the Americas. Role Overview We are expanding the MAAS (Metal as a Service) team and seeking an Engineering Manager to lead and grow high‑performing distributed engineering teams. MAAS delivers cloud‑style on‑demand API provisioning, network configuration, and storage management for private bare‑metal infrastructure. The stack is primarily written in Python and Go and spans hardware detection, provisioning, a web interface, API, and CLI. Responsibilities Lead a distributed team of engineers in your time zone (Americas or EMEA). Coach, mentor, and provide career planning for team members. Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders. Participate in engineering processes through code and architectural review. Engage with broader teams at Canonical, the open source community, and partners. Travel to internal and external global events for 4‑6 weeks per year. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or related field. Strong academic record and proven experience delivering software using Python, Go, or similar languages. Experience with Linux system administration (preferably Debian or Ubuntu). Familiarity with modern Linux cloud‑computing technologies, including networking, storage, containers, and Kubernetes. Technical aptitude for understanding complex distributed systems. Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills. Experience with Agile software development methodologies. Ability to mentor, develop, and support team members. Result‑oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments. Availability to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks. Nice‑to‑Have Skills Experience with TypeScript and modern web frameworks such as React, Angular, Svelte, or Vue. Background in data center infrastructure management and design.
