Operator III – CNC Operator at The Gund Company Job Summary Implement the Production Fulfillment Process steps by creating programs for CNC machine tools related to fabrication of parts according to customer requirements while minimizing costs. Second level of CNC programming. Use knowledge of machine operations to develop code to control machine operation based on engineered drawings and specifications. Determine suitability of a part for automation and appropriate machine assignments based on efficiency and quality. Prepare process plans including positioning, feed rate, speed, tool changes, and other variables. Work directly with machines and operators to verify accuracy and safety of programs. Assignments tend to be more complex with unusual shapes, sizes, finishes, and materials. Short runs on valuable parts may limit opportunities for trial runs. Provide training and direction to others at this level. Essential Job Functions Develop programs to control machining or processing by automatic machine tools. Analyze job orders, drawings, blueprints, and specifications to calculate dimensions, tool selection, machine speeds, and feed rates. Determine sequence of machine operations and select proper cutting tools. Prepare blueprint layouts using computer-assisted drafting software. Write programs in machine controller language and store them on media such as punch tapes, magnetic tapes, or disks. Revise programs to eliminate errors and retest. Write instruction sheets and cutter lists for machine controllers. Design jigs & fixtures for production. Maintain updated CNC programs from backup files. Conduct tests and in‑process inspections to evaluate quality or performance. Setup and run CNC/manual fabrication machines as needed. Provide guidance, feedback, and positive behavior modeling. Recommend tooling needs for new customer quotes. Determine if tools are undamaged and safe for use. Suggest improvements to production and order‑processing efficiency. Assist with training other team members. Follow safety rules and quality standards. Model ethical and moral behavior consistent with The Gund Company values. Qualifications and Competencies Minimum 3 years of experience as a CNC Programmer. Basic English level. Ability to work independently with minimal defects. Communicate with supervisor regarding work‑order priority. Openness to change due to emergency orders or fabrication needs. Advanced math and blueprint‑reading skills. Ability to use basic measuring instruments. Excellent problem‑solving skills. Experience in programming and using computer design software. Willingness to work overtime as needed. Experience in the manufacturing industry. Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field. Experience as a drafter, technician, machinist, and/or Operator III. Specialized training with strong math skills. Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear, sit, reach with hands and arms, stand, walk and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include the ability to adjust focus. Work Environment The work environment is typical of most shop environments; not climate controlled and subject to outdoor weather conditions. Team members are exposed to sounds and noise levels that are distracting. Frequent exposure to fumes/dust particles; may require use of respirators or other PPE. May come in contact with toxic or caustic chemicals.
