IoT/Telematics Solutions Engineer

Description: An IoT/Telematics Solutions Engineer designs and implements solutions for tracking and monitoring physical assets in the supply chain, such as vehicle fleets, equipment, and inventory using IoT devices and telematics data. This role can be full-time within logistics firms or project-based via providers. In Ohio’s trucking and distribution industry, these specialists ensure that trucks, trailers, and even warehouse equipment are connected and feeding data (location, performance, condition) into management systems for real-time visibility.

Responsibilities

Work closely with fleet managers and IT teams to design and deploy telematics systems for vehicles and logistics assets, choosing appropriate hardware (GPS trackers, sensors) and software platforms. Integrate telematics platforms with existing company infrastructure – for example, connecting vehicle GPS data and engine diagnostics into the Transportation Management System or maintenance systems to enable real-time tracking and proactive maintenance. Install and configure IoT devices on trucks, trailers, containers, or warehouse machinery (e.g., temperature sensors for cold chain, vibration sensors for equipment health), ensuring proper data transmission and network connectivity. Develop custom applications or use APIs to aggregate telematics data (location, speed, idle time, fuel usage, driver behavior, etc.) and present it on dashboards or alerts for operations teams.

Monitor data streams from deployed devices and troubleshoot connectivity issues (cellular/satellite), data accuracy problems, or device malfunctions. Provide technical support for on-board hardware and firmware updates. Analyze telematics data to identify opportunities for improvement: e.g., optimizing routes by examining GPS traces, improving driver safety by analyzing harsh braking/acceleration events, or scheduling maintenance based on actual usage patterns. Collaborate with safety and compliance teams to ensure ELD (Electronic Logging Device) data and other regulatory-required telematics (like driver Hours of Service) are correctly captured and reported.

Provide training to drivers, fleet admins, and logistics coordinators on using new telematics features or IoT tracking dashboards, explaining how to leverage the data for decision-making (e.g., responding to real-time exceptions). Ensure data security and privacy of telematics systems by implementing encryption, secure authentication, and compliance with relevant regulations (like not violating driver privacy while monitoring). Stay informed about evolving telematics and IoT technologies in logistics – such as new sensor capabilities, 5G communications, or edge computing for real-time analytics – and recommend strategic adoption where beneficial. Support cross-functional initiatives that use IoT data, for instance, feeding trailer temperature data into quality systems for food safety, or using RFID/IoT for real-time inventory tracking in yards and warehouses.
