The role:

The Chief Engineer is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of all engineering and technical systems onboard a vessel transporting natural gas. This includes propulsion, power generation, cargo-related systems, and auxiliary machinery. The role ensures full compliance with company policies, class requirements, flag state regulations, and international codes applicable to natural gas operations.

Responsibilities:

- Oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair of all engineering systems onboard the vessel, including propulsion plants, generators, boilers, compressors, pumps, and auxiliary machinery.
- Ensure the safe operation and maintenance of cargo-related systems, including compressors, vaporizers, inert gas systems, loading and distribution, and associated control and safety systems.
- Ensure compliance with the IGC Code, STCW, ISM Code, MARPOL, and applicable class and flag state requirements.
- Lead, supervise, and train engine department personnel, ensuring operational readiness for natural gas vessel operations.
- Plan and execute preventive and corrective maintenance programs using the vessel’s maintenance management system.
- Monitor machinery performance, fuel and energy efficiency, and machinery condition to ensure safe and optimal operation.
- Coordinate and support inspections, audits, dry dock activities, gas trials, and equipment commissioning.
- Ensure strict adherence to HSSE standards, including permit-to-work systems, LOTO, gas safety procedures, and emergency response readiness.
- Maintain accurate technical documentation, machinery logs, maintenance records, and regulatory documentation.
- Build and maintain a safe and efficient engine department with focus on teamwork and personal development.

What you bring:

- Valid Chief Engineer license in accordance with STCW regulations.
- A management-level marine credential demonstrating qualification to serve as Chief Engineer on vessels with unlimited propulsion power.
- Prior experience as Chief Engineer or Senior Engineer onboard vessels involved in natural gas operations.
- Strong technical knowledge of propulsion, power generation, and gas-related machinery systems.
- Knowledge of dynamic positioning system technical requirements and operations.
- Solid understanding of the IGC Code, ISM Code, MARPOL, and class society requirements.
- Proven leadership and engine room management experience.
- Strong troubleshooting, risk assessment, and decision-making skills.
- Proficiency in English, written and verbal.
