The IATF (1st edition) represents a groundbreaking document, emphasizing customer orientation and incorporating numerous established customer-specific requirements.

ISO/TS (1st edition) was initially developed by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) to harmonize various assessment and certification systems globally within the automotive supply chain. Subsequent revisions were made (2nd edition in , and 3rd edition in ) to enhance the automotive sector or align with ISO updates. ISO/TS, along with supporting technical publications from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and their respective National Automotive Industry Associations, introduced a unified set of techniques and methods for product and process development in automotive manufacturing worldwide.

In preparation for transitioning from ISO/TS: (3rd edition) to the Automotive QMS Standard, IATF, feedback was gathered from certification bodies, auditors, suppliers, and OEMs to develop IATF: (1st edition), which supersedes ISO/TS: (3rd edition).

The IATF maintains strong collaboration with ISO through ongoing liaison committee status, ensuring continued alignment with ISO standards.

All requirements of this International Standard are generic and intended to be applicable to any organization, regardless of type, size, or the products and services offered.
