As a Marine Mammal Observer, you will be responsible for identifying marine animals using visual technology and passive acoustic monitoring equipment and software.
Key responsibilities include:
- Monitoring for visual and acoustic detections of marine mammals around observation platforms/vessels for up to 12 hours in a 24-hour period.
- Documenting behavior and other essential data.
- Operating and maintaining field equipment, including passive acoustic monitoring equipment, Garmin GPS, binoculars with reticles, range finder, and high-resolution digital camera with video capabilities.
Minimum qualifications include:
- A 4-year degree with a major in biological sciences.
- Certification by a physician as fit for sea duty, including not being susceptible to chronic motion sickness, ability to live in confined quarters, and ability to tolerate stress.
- Current STCW Basic Safety Training (BST), or GWO or BOSIET training completed within the last 2 years.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification.
- Proof of eligibility to work within the US.
Travel and accommodations will be provided, with some reimbursement for travel to and from the staging location.
Locations/homeports will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
