Job Overview

We're seeking a highly skilled Principal Game Designer to drive the product vision for a new game concept from ideation to launch. The ideal candidate will lead the prototyping efforts, define game design pillars, and architect a set of systems that meet the prototyping goals. This is an excellent opportunity to build and mentor a highly effective product team, share learnings with the broader product team, and contribute to the overall development of our product strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Product Vision: Develop a deep understanding of the opportunity space and work with product leadership to build a game concept that articulates how we can win in this space.
  • Prototyping: Lead the prototyping efforts to prove out the concept and find its best expression by defining game design pillars, driving discussions, and maintaining alignment on the team.
  • Team Leadership: Build and mentor a highly effective product team, pushing them to their fullest potential.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Become an expert in the opportunity spaces, genres, and game mechanics explored during prototyping, and share learnings with the broader product team.
  • Design Philosophy: Develop an independent design philosophy that upholds the key tenets of Fortis' approach to products while adding your own unique approach to thinking about emerging patterns in service design.

Requirements

  • System Understanding: Possess a holistic view of game systems and the downstream effects of all design decisions throughout the product and player lifecycle.
  • Design Principles: Have a firm understanding of fundamental design principles, metagame systems, game economies, and player psychology to design from first principles.
  • Communication: Be able to communicate your creative vision in a way that inspires and motivates teams.
  • Feedback Synthesis: Ability to synthesize feedback from team members, user playtests, and other validation efforts into product insights and rapidly iterate on designs.
  • Discipline and Focus: Maintain a razor-sharp focus on what matters and the discipline to ruthlessly prioritize against it.
  • Games as a Service: Possess extensive knowledge of games as a service and live operations, with the ability to build efficient design processes, workflows, and tooling to enable it.
  • Leadership and Mentorship: Enthusiasm for directing, mentoring, and elevating the people around you to do their best work.
  • Curiosity and Learning: A natural curiosity and eagerness to learn, with a strong perspective on the latest trends and their relation to our current and future projects.
