Controls Engineer – Cognex Vision Specialist

Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer with strong Cognex Vision expertise and prior involvement in GM automotive projects to join our Engineering Department. This role is responsible for delivering high-quality electrical and controls design work, generating accurate project quotations, and managing the complete lifecycle of automation systems—from concept development and design through build supervision, start-up, debugging, and final commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement electrical designs, control system architectures, PLC/HMI programs, and automation concepts according to project requirements.
- Design, configure, and deploy Cognex Vision systems, including camera selection, lensing, lighting, job creation, calibration, and communication with PLCs.
- Support sales activities by participating in customer presentations and preparing technical project quotations and proposals.
- Collaborate with customers, vendors, and internal engineering teams to ensure compliance with technical specifications and industry standards.
- Supervise machine build phases, installation, system integration, and commissioning while ensuring adherence to project timelines and budgets.
- Maintain detailed project documentation, manage supplier deliverables, and provide regular progress reports.
- Serve as Project Engineer when required, leading technical coordination and execution.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, or related field (professional title required).
- 5+ years of experience in control systems engineering, including automation equipment design and implementation.
- Strong proficiency in PLC programming (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi) and HMI development.
- Experience working with industrial communication networks such as Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT, Modbus.
- Background in automation equipment such as power & free systems, indexing tables, walking beams, and assembly machinery.
- Excellent communication, organizational, analytical, and customer-facing skills.
- Valid driver's license and legal eligibility to work in the U.S.
- Valid U.S. visa (any type permitting international business travel).
- English communication skills at a B2–C1 level (oral and written).
Cognex Vision Requirements (Mandatory)
- Minimum 3+ years of hands-on experience with Cognex In-Sight, Cognex VisionPro, and Cognex Designer.
- Ability to design complete vision solutions including:
- Camera, lens, and lighting selection.
- Image acquisition optimization and tool configuration.
- Development of inspections such as pattern matching, OCR/OCV, measurement, presence/absence, and defect detection.
- Calibration routines (manual and automated) and multi-camera synchronization.
- Skilled in integrating Cognex systems with PLCs and robot controllers using industrial communication protocols.
- Experience troubleshooting complex vision issues (lighting, reflections, part variation, false positives/negatives).
- Preferred: Experience implementing Cognex systems in GM or Stellantis environments, following their standards and documentation requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in automation installation and commissioning within the automotive industry (GM/Stellantis – assembly or powertrain).
- Familiarity with GM specifications for controls, safety, vision, and documentation.
