Role Summary:
This internship offers practical experience in applied research, healthcare training evaluation, and global health program management, while contributing to Smile Train's mission of empowering local medical professionals through sustainable, high-quality cleft care.
Reports To: Dr. Alejandro Gonzalez, Director for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean / Alma Contreras, Program Assistant for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean
Key Responsibilities:
· Lead the implementation and evaluation of Smile Train's innovative surgical training tools, including the SIMULARE simulation models and Virtual Reality Surgery App, to assess their impact on improving technical proficiency in cleft lip and palate surgeries.
· Collaborate with the surgical team at Hospital ABC (a Smile Train partner institution) to coordinate hands-on training sessions, data collection, and evaluation activities.
· Design and administer surveys and assessment instruments for participating surgeons and medical professionals to evaluate knowledge acquisition, skill development, and user experience.
· Collect, clean, and analyze quantitative and qualitative data to evaluate the effectiveness of training interventions, ensuring methodological rigor and reliability.
· Develop and maintain a structured research database for all project data and findings, ensuring accuracy, organization, and long-term usability.
· Prepare monthly research summaries and progress reports for academic supervisors and Smile Train project leads, highlighting insights and recommendations for continuous improvement.
· Design a detailed project timeline (chronogram) that aligns research activities with expected outcomes, deliverables, and evaluation milestones.
Required Education and Experience:
· Recently completed a bachelor's degree of Mechatronics Engineering at Universidad Iberoamericana.
· Demonstrated interest in global health, surgical training, or health systems strengthening.
· Strong research and analytical skills, including experience with data collection, data entry, and basic data analysis (quantitative or qualitative).
· Excellent organizational and communication skills, with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
· Comfortable collaborating with multidisciplinary medical teams.
· Proficient in English and Spanish (oral and written).
· Previous experience with survey design, program evaluation, or healthcare training is an asset but not required.
· Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) or similar tools for reporting and analysis.
