Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner – Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (PMHNP-APRN)

Responsibility

The role of the advanced practice nurse is to provide psychiatric medication services to the people we serve in formal collaboration with psychiatrists.  In addition, they provide consultation to other clinical staff in developing and monitoring the treatment plan for patients and work collaboratively with primary care and dental services to provide holistic care to patients.

Key Tasks and

Responsibilities

  • Assesses patients with mental health symptoms and recommends medications or other mental health services

  • Educates clients about medication doses, side effects, uses and interactions.

  • Provides AIMS testing and Metabolic Screenings for persons on antipsychotic and other conditions.

  • Works collaboratively with primary care and dental services to assure overall health and wellness for patients

  • Orders appropriate lab tests related to medications or potential side effects of medications and communicate those results with patients in a timely manner

  • Documents all services delivered in a manner that meets accreditation, contractual and Center policies and procedures

  • Completes and/or reviews vital signs documentation.

  • Assists clients with accessing resources such as patient assistance programs, POS medications and community resources

  • Participates in clinical staffing as needed

  • Provides emergency medical evaluation as needed

  • Provides medical screenings upon entry into the program.

Provides Crisis Intervention as needed.

  • Demonstrates a superior assessment skills and possesses a strong knowledge of psychotropic and physical medications.

  • Is able to work collaboratively with psychiatrists and other mental health clinicians

  • Excellent and accurate verbal, written and telephone communication skills.

  • Works within scope of practice and refers to psychiatrists as needed

  • Has an array of multiple and creative mental health interventions to draw upon

  • Has an extensive knowledge of mental illnesses and their treatments.

  • Possesses a solid working knowledge of community resources to make good referrals

Degree

Requirements

A minimum of a master degree in nursing in mental health nursing with doctorate in nursing practice preferred.

Licensure

Requirements

Licensed Professional Nurse in Missouri, Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner or Psychiatric/Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist with Board Certification by the American Nurses credentialing Center or similar organization.

Physical Requirements

Works in a medical office setting. Must have the ability to sit, stand, walk, bend to provide patient care and operate equipment.  Must be able to lift 25 pounds and provide physical support to patients with mobility issues. Must be able to handle varying but sometimes high levels of stress. Must be able to use a computer and other office equipment. Must be able to communicate and respond to inquiries both in person and on the telephone.

Preferred two years experience in psychiatric nursing.
