Job Description
The Team Leader, Risk Monitoring is a critical role responsible for protecting and its partners from losses and financial crime risks. You will lead a team of Risk Analysts dedicated to the continuous surveillance of existing merchants within our Platforms ecosystem.
As a founding member of the Mexico City risk hub, you will build and scale a team focused on identifying potential fraudulent activity, transaction laundering, and deceptive business practices. Your mission is to mitigate financial loss, prevent reputational damage, and ensure strict adherence to Card Scheme rules and AML regulations. This role requires a blend of investigative curiosity, data-driven decision-making, and the leadership agility to build a function from the ground up.
Key Responsibilities
Team Foundational Growth
Hub Establishment: Lead the recruitment and training of the inaugural Risk Monitoring team in Mexico City, ensuring a high standard of analytical talent.
Process Localization: Adapt global monitoring frameworks to the target market, ensuring that procedures are robust, documented, and scalable.
Knowledge Excellence: Act as the local subject matter expert (SME) on merchant risk, providing the team with the tools and techniques needed to spot sophisticated risk patterns.
Cultural Leadership: Act as a brand ambassador for 's operating principles (Talk Straight, One Team, Fundamentally Positive), establishing a high-trust, high-performance culture from day one.
Risk Surveillance & Investigation
Detection & Analysis: Oversee the daily monitoring of merchant behavior to identify red flags, including fraudulent activity, deceptive business practices, outsized credit risks, and suspected transaction laundering.
Risk Shielding: Protect from financial exposure (chargebacks/losses) and ensure compliance with Card Scheme (Visa/Mastercard) monitoring programs.
Advanced Investigations: Lead the team in deep-dive investigations of complex cases, utilizing internal data and external intelligence to uncover hidden risk networks.
Operational Management
Performance Oversight: Define and track team KPIs, focusing on alert clearing speed, accuracy of risk assessments, and the quality of investigative narratives.
Tool Optimization: Provide feedback on risk engine rules and monitoring logic to reduce false positives while increasing the detection of genuine threats.
Escalation Management: Serve as the first escalation point for high-stakes risk decisions, including merchant offboarding or fund freezes, coordinating closely with Legal and Compliance as required.
Stakeholder & Scheme Collaboration
Cross-Functional Synergy: Partner with the Onboarding, Compliance, Scheme Compliance and Credit Risk teams to ensure a closed-loop feedback system between "entry" and "active" risk.
Scheme Compliance: Ensure all monitoring activities align with global Card Scheme requirements and participate in audits or reviews as required.
Reporting: Deliver regular insights to senior leadership regarding the Platform portfolio's risk profile and emerging regional trends.
Qualifications
Experience: 8+ years in Risk Management, Fraud Investigation, or Merchant Monitoring, with 3+ years in a leadership/management capacity.
Risk Expertise: Proven track record in identifying merchant risks including Transaction Laundering, Deceptive Practices (negative option billing, etc.), and Card Scheme violations.
Analytical Prowess: Ability to query and interpret complex datasets to identify trends; experience with SQL or data visualization tools (e.g., Looker, Tableau) is a plus.
Foundational Mindset: Demonstrated experience in building teams, writing SOPs, or scaling operations in a high-growth environment.
Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of the payments ecosystem, including acquirer/processor dynamics and global AML standards.
Communication: Fluency in English is required, with the ability to explain complex risk findings to non-technical stakeholders.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Success
Alert Efficiency: Time to identify and action high-risk merchant behavior.
Loss Mitigation: Reduction in avoidable losses stemming from fraudulent or non-compliant merchant activity.
Scheme Health: Minimizing the number of merchants entered into Card Scheme monitoring programs (e.g., VAMP).
