Structural Designer

Must be able to provide innovative packaging solutions in a timely manner. They must lead efforts to ensure the production facility can efficiently produce new designs while acting as packaging subject matter expert for the team

REQUIRED SKILLS:

• Develop structural design solutions for paper-based packaging (folding carton, corrugated, rigid box). Experience with non-paper packaging materials a plus.
• Manage design projects and maintain effective communication to sales, customer service, and manufacturing.
• Occasionally (10%) engage directly with client, along with sales business development, as subject matter expert, to obtain project related information.
• Ensure new designs are created for optimum efficiency for production.
• Create high-end, flawless packaging prototypes for customer presentations.
• Create organized, clear, and consistent specifications, dielines, and BOMs.
• Ensure all designs meet customer testing standards.
• Follow direction of the management team to ensure proper design protocols and procedures are followed.
• Be able to interpret concrete and abstract direction from clients, sales and management to develop a solution that exceeds customer expectations.
• Work collaboratively with design team members to identify and develop the best possible packaging solution.
• Effectively communicate reasoning behind design decisions.
• Maintain clear organization of large ongoing projects involving a multitude of components and revisions.
• Create 3D renderings including conceptual packaging design, exploded-view schematics, and detailed assembly instructions

REQUIRED SKILLS:

• Bachelor Degree in packaging engineering, industrial design or related file.
• 3+ years of relevant work experience in structural design of packaging for educational, publishing, retail, consumer products, technology and/or pharmaceutical markets.
• Demonstrated experience in developing innovative solutions for paper-based packaging. Experience working in product design and non-paper packaging a significant benefit.
• Able to demonstrate ability to solve somewhat more complex problems by analyzing variables and applying appropriate solutions learned through experience and proficiency in understanding the job. Must be able to recognize anomalies and critical situations and respond appropriately. Must be able to communicate and interact with a variety of internal/external customers and/or co-workers at level of detail required to resolve issues of moderate complexity.
• May require knowledge of or ability to quickly learn specialized software to complete work assignments.
• Must be able to proactively listen to others to understand issues and situations.
• Must be able to clearly articulate business needs to both internal and external customers.
• Very good knowledge of packaging manufacturing equipment, processes, and capabilities.
• Very good knowledge of packaging prototyping equipment and processes.
• Must understand the entire design process from concept, prototype, testing, and production.
• Must have a sense of urgency.
• Able to apply strong functional computer knowledge.Advanced knowledge of ArtiosCAD required. Basic knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft products preferred. Solidworks / Rhino 3D experience a plus.
• Knowledge of packaging testing procedures- ISTA, TAPPI, ASTM.
• Occasional Travel may be required.
• Bilingual (English / Spanish) a very significant plus.
