Position Summary

The Wastewater Treatment (WWT) Supervisor is responsible for the 
daily operation, compliance, and continuous improvement
 of the wastewater treatment system at KC Jones Plating's Hazel Park facility. This role is 
hands-on and highly accountable
, ensuring full compliance with all federal, state, and local environmental permits while supporting safe, efficient, and reliable plating operations.

The WWT Supervisor will manage chemical treatment systems, sludge handling, documentation, inspections, and corrective actions, and will work closely with production, maintenance, and laboratory personnel to prevent excursions and maintain stable plant performance.

Key Responsibilities

Wastewater Operations & Compliance

  • Operate and supervise daily wastewater treatment processes, including:
  • Metals precipitation
  • pH adjustment
  • Clarification and filtration
  • Sludge dewatering and handling
  • Ensure continuous compliance with:
  • EGLE permits
  • Local sewer authority discharge limits
  • EPA and state regulations (including NESHAP where applicable)
  • Review daily lab results, trend data, and discharge reports to identify risks before excursions occur
  • Immediately investigate, correct, and document any exceedances or abnormal conditions

Monitoring, Testing & Documentation

  • Perform and/or oversee all required sampling, testing, and analysis (metals, pH, flow, etc.)
  • Maintain complete and accurate records, including:
  • Daily logs
  • Chain-of-custody forms
  • Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMRs)
  • Hazardous waste manifests
  • Chemical inventories and usage logs
  • Prepare for and support regulatory inspections and audits
  • Ensure timely and accurate submission of required reports

Preventive Control & Continuous Improvement

  • Implement preventive controls to eliminate recurring wastewater issues
  • Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for any excursions or compliance risks
  • Develop and implement corrective and preventive actions
  • Drive 5S, housekeeping, and professionalism standards in the WWT area
  • Identify opportunities to improve:
  • System reliability
  • Chemical consumption
  • Sludge generation and disposal costs

Safety & Environmental Stewardship

  • Enforce all safety procedures related to chemical handling, PPE, confined spaces, and equipment operation
  • Train WWT operators and relevant plant personnel on:
  • Wastewater procedures
  • Emergency response
  • Spill prevention and reporting
  • Support plant environmental objectives and sustainability initiatives

Coordination & Leadership

  • Coordinate closely with:
  • Production and plating departments
  • Maintenance
  • Quality and laboratory teams
  • Corporate EHS and technical resources
  • Provide clear communication during upsets, maintenance events, or abnormal conditions
  • Lead by example with professionalism, organization, and accountability

Qualifications & Experience
Required

  • 5+ years of wastewater treatment experience in an 
    industrial or plating environment
  • Strong knowledge of:
  • Metals treatment (nickel, zinc, chromium, etc.)
  • pH control and precipitation chemistry
  • Sludge handling and disposal
  • Experience working under Michigan EGLE regulations and local sewer authority requirements
  • Ability to interpret lab data, trends, and permit limits
  • Hands-on mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills

Preferred

  • Wastewater Operator Certification (State of Michigan or equivalent)
  • Experience in electroplating or metal finishing operations
  • Familiarity with hazardous waste regulations (RCRA)
  • Experience supporting environmental audits and inspections
  • Leadership or supervisory experience in an industrial setting

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform hands-on tasks as needed
