Position Summary:
The High School Early World History & Geography Teacher at ASFG is responsible for cultivating an intellectually rigorous and supportive learning environment for 9th-grade students. This role introduces students to the foundational concepts of world history, human geography, and global patterns, emphasizing the relationships between people, places, cultures, political systems, economies, and environments. The teacher will guide students in developing strong analytical, spatial reasoning, and historical thinking skills that prepare them for advanced coursework in the ASFG social studies sequence.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in History, Geography, Social Studies Education, or a related field.
  • Valid teaching certification.
  • Minimum of 2 years of high school social studies teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of world history and introductory human geography frameworks (e.g., cultural patterns, political geography, population and migration, economic systems).
  • Ability to teach map skills, geographic reasoning, and foundational historical analysis.

Curriculum Implementation & Instruction

  • Deliver lessons aligned with the 9th Grade Early World History & Geography curriculum, incorporating:

  • Integrate geographic concepts such as spatial patterns, diffusion, scale of analysis, human–environment interactions, and demographic dynamics.
  • Use global case studies—from ancient civilizations to modern geopolitical issues—to illustrate historical continuity, change, and cause-and-effect relationships.
  • Connect course content to contemporary global issues to deepen student understanding of the modern world.
  • Apply differentiated instruction to support diverse learners and ensure equitable access to rigorous content.

Skill Development

  • Build student proficiency in:
    • Map-reading, GIS/GPS interpretation, and spatial data analysis
    • Interpreting charts, graphs, demographic data, and global indicators
    • Identifying historical patterns, causation, and global interconnections
    • Using geographic and historical concepts to explain human behavior and societal change
  • Strengthen student abilities to construct explanations, analyze sources, compare regions, and apply concepts such as diffusion, migration, sovereignty, globalization, and development.

Professional Expectations

  • Be present on campus from 7:45 a.m.–2:45 p.m. (Wednesdays until 4:00 p.m.)
  • Hold at least 1 hour/week of office hours before or after school
  • Respond to parent emails within 48 hours
  • Participate in department meetings, Wednesday PD sessions, and all-school training
  • Use Google Classroom consistently for assignments, communication, and feedback
  • Uphold shared classroom expectations and schoolwide norms

Community Engagement

  • Support and participate in major school events such as International Family Day, ArtFest, the Winter Giving Celebration, and high school graduation
