**_So, what will the Surveying Technician_**_do?_**
The Surveying Aide will support the U.S. Forest Service's Boundary Management Program at El Yunque National Forest by assisting with land surveying tasks related to boundary identification, monumentation, and maintenance. This role involves fieldwork in tropical forest conditions, supporting licensed surveyors and forestry staff to ensure accurate and up-to-date boundary delineation of federally managed lands.
**_What does a typical day look like for the Surveying Technician?_**
You will:
- Assist with reconnaissance, monument recovery, and field data collection for forest boundaries.
- Operate surveying tools such as compasses, GNSS units, range finders, and total stations.
- Carry and set up surveying equipment and assist with chaining, flagging, and other field operations.
- Record field notes, observations, and measurements as directed.
- Clear brush and vegetation along boundary lines as needed for visibility and access.
- Support the maintenance of existing boundary markers and signage.
- Participate in safety briefings and adhere to Forest Service field protocols.
- Collaborate with survey teams, landowners, and other stakeholders in boundary projects.
- Authorization to permanently work in the United States without sponsorship.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 6 months to 1 year of experience in land surveying, forestry, GIS, or related field (or relevant training).
- Ability to hike in rugged terrain and work outdoors in humid, tropical environments.
- Basic knowledge of survey instruments and data collection methods.
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to follow instructions.
- Bilingual (English and Spanish) communication skills.
- Experience working in or near public lands, particularly U.S. Forest Service environments.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
