About the Role

We are seeking a meticulous, experienced, and analytically sharp Personal Injury Case & Financial Auditor to join our client's legal operations team. In this dual-function role, you will be responsible for auditing both the integrity of active and closed case files and the accuracy of all financial transactions associated with personal injury cases — including medical billing, settlement disbursements, cost advances, and lien resolutions.

This role is critical to the firm's quality control, compliance, and financial accountability. You will work cross-functionally with attorneys, case managers, paralegals, and accounting staff to identify errors, inconsistencies, and inefficiencies — and recommend corrective action.

Key Responsibilities

Case File Auditing

  • Conduct thorough audits of active and closed personal injury case files to ensure completeness, accuracy, and compliance with firm standards
  • Verify that all required documentation is present and properly executed: retainer agreements, medical authorizations, accident reports, medical records, demand letters, settlement agreements, and closing statements
  • Review case timelines to ensure deadlines, statutes of limitations, and court-ordered dates were properly tracked and met
  • Identify missing documents, procedural gaps, or compliance issues and report findings to supervising attorneys
  • Audit case notes and case management system entries for accuracy, completeness, and consistency
  • Prepare detailed audit reports with findings, risk assessments, and recommended corrective actions
  • Track resolution of audit findings and follow up to confirm corrective measures have been implemented

Financial Auditing

  • Audit all financial transactions related to personal injury cases: cost advances, medical bill payments, settlement disbursements, attorney fees, and lien payoffs
  • Review and reconcile settlement statements and disbursement sheets to ensure all figures are accurate, complete, and properly authorized
  • Verify that medical lien reductions and payoffs are correctly calculated and documented prior to disbursement
  • Audit invoices from medical providers, expert witnesses, investigators, and third-party vendors for accuracy and proper approval
  • Identify billing discrepancies, duplicate charges, unauthorized expenses, or miscalculations and elevate findings immediately
  • Ensure compliance with state bar trust accounting rules and IOLTA requirements where applicable
  • Coordinate with accounting and bookkeeping staff to resolve discrepancies and implement financial controls

Quality Control & Process Improvement

  • Identify recurring patterns of error, inefficiency, or non-compliance across case files and financial records
  • Develop and maintain audit checklists, templates, and standard operating procedures for both case and financial audits
  • Collaborate with team leads, case managers, and attorneys to implement process improvements based on audit findings
  • Assist in training staff on documentation standards, billing accuracy, and compliance requirements
  • Maintain a detailed audit log and reporting dashboard to track firm-wide audit performance over time

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 1-3 years of experience in a legal auditing, legal operations, paralegal, or case management role within a personal injury law firm (required)
  • Strong understanding of personal injury case lifecycle, documentation requirements, and settlement processes
  • Experience reviewing and reconciling legal settlement statements, disbursement sheets, and medical billing
  • Familiarity with medical lien types (ERISA, Medicare, Medicaid, letters of protection, health insurance subrogation)
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to identify discrepancies across large volumes of documents and financial records
  • Proficiency with case management software and Microsoft Office / Google Suite (Excel/Sheets proficiency required)
  • High level of discretion and integrity in handling confidential case and financial information

Preferred

  • Bilingual English/Spanish (strong plus)
  • Paralegal certificate, accounting background, or related legal/financial education
  • Familiarity with legal billing software or accounting platforms
