Main purpose of job:

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) at the British Embassy in Mexico is looking for an enthusiastic and proactive Energy Trade Officer. You will work with UK exporters in the energy industry to deliver an increase in trade and exports within the sector. You will work across a multi-disciplinary team (of policy, programme, and commercial colleagues) to deliver commercial objectives as part of a cross-Embassy energy and sustainability strategy, which includes a focus on clean growth. You will develop excellent relationships with British and Mexican companies and deliver an impactful programme of activities via a robust pipeline of UK exports in the energy sector throughout the supply chain. You will also work with Trade Policy colleagues to overcome market access barriers and with Marcomms and UK-based colleagues in promoting Mexico as a destination for British companies to do business. You will manage relationships with energy and environmental businesses, employing excellent account management skills and identifying opportunities to collaborate with related sectors (Infrastructure, Technology, Advanced Engineering) as well as markets across Latin America and the Caribbean as part of DBT’s regional Energy Strategy. 

The ideal candidate should be able to provide excellent administrative assistance for accounting and logistics related to events and initiatives managed by the DBT Energy and Infrastructure Team, covering renewable energy, environmental services, and the energy transition. The ideal candidate should also strive to collaborate and partner with internal and external stakeholders to achieve the energy team’s strategic activities, including but not limited to promoting UK capabilities in Mexico, communicating opportunities for UK companies in Mexico, conducting business and market research, and developing business intelligence strategies. 

The successful candidate will have strong organisation and communication skills, will be able to prioritise flexibly, and will use their own initiative to deliver to deadlines. He/she will also have strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with Embassy teams and different stakeholders.

Roles and responsibilities:

Provide logistic and organisational support in trade missions and events organised by the Energy Team, paying attention to detail in internal documents and agendas. An excellent customer service focus is a must, as external communication with UK companies and Mexican stakeholders is required. 
Identify potential key stakeholders for the Energy Team by attending meetings, relevant trade shows, and networking events. 
Conduct desk research to identify potential clients and customers for the UK offer of energy and sustainability services. 
Schedule meetings and handle queries from UK companies when applicable. 
Develop and maintain excellent market intelligence on the Mexican energy sector, working with trade associations, sector experts, and DBT HQ in London to inform Embassy strategies and the UK industry on the latest developments. 
Work with UK companies to overcome barriers to trade, leveraging relationships with government and regulators. 
Maintain and grow a pipeline of UK companies with the purpose of increasing their footprint and operations in Mexico. Reach out to new companies to pitch commercial opportunities in Mexico with the goal of attracting them into the market.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

Essential on arrival: 

A BA degree in business or a related field (e.g., International Relations, Economics, Administration, International Business, Engineering, etc.) 
Excellent project management, stakeholder management, and account management skills.
At least two years of relevant business-related experience and a solid understanding of the Mexican business environment.
Clear motivation and personal commitment to meeting challenging targets with a proven track record of achievement. 
A strong work ethic, inter-personal and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively. 
Excellent customer service and attention to detail.
High level of competence in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required. 
Interest in the commercial opportunities between the UK and Mexico. Candidate is expected to have advanced research, written and organisational skills. 

Candidates must be able to live and work in Mexico in their own right.

Language requirements: 

Language: Candidates must be fluent in both written & spoken English and Spanish 

Level of language required: Proficient

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

Desirable:

Experience or knowledge of the energy sector in Mexico. 
A network of industry contacts in the energy sector in Mexico (or the ability to develop such a network) 
Some familiarisation of market entry strategies into Mexico for UK companies .
