Software Engineering Manager - Ubuntu Linux Kernel Join Canonical, a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, as we continue to strengthen the Ubuntu platform for enterprises and technology markets. Our Ubuntu distribution is widely used in cloud, AI, engineering, and IoT initiatives worldwide. Location: Working from home, worldwide. Our kernel teams operate across all time zones with no office in Taipei. The role entails Leading a geographically distributed team of software engineers in delivering and supporting all Ubuntu Linux kernels. Taking ownership of specific aspects of the Ubuntu Linux stack, including: Working with silicon or cloud partners to implement optimized kernels for their environments. Ensuring Ubuntu Linux runs on a wide range of diverse hardware platforms. Defining and enforcing stringent quality control standards for the user community. Mitigating security threats and exploits within the kernel. Automating processes related to build, test, and delivery of the kernel. Engaging with other Canonical teams, the open source community, and commercial partners. What we are looking for in you Significant programming experience in C, with Python, Golang, or other similar languages highly regarded. Substantial experience with operating system kernel internals and concepts (Linux experience is a plus). Demonstrated experience managing or leading a team of software engineers. Ability to coordinate across multiple distinct teams with differing technical focus. Familiarity with version control, preferably Git. Prior experience with software packaging formats, especially Ubuntu/Debian/Snap. Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills. Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks long. Nice‑to‑have skills Experience with kernel patching and debugging. Strong grasp of device drivers, BSPs, and other low‑level system engineering. Background in driving CI/CD and process automation initiatives. Prior public involvement with an open source project.
