Teams meet 2-4 times a year in interesting locations worldwide to align on strategy and execution.The company is founder-led, profitable, and growing.We are hiring an Ubuntu Core Software Engineer to redefine Linux experiences in embedded environments with the smallest, most secure, and updatable IoT operating system. This role is ideal for someone passionate about open source, Linux, security, and developer experience. It requires high technical skill in low-level OS, kernel, and device firmware.Our mission is to enable building robust solutions across IoT, automotive, and aviation using a secure embedded Linux OS. We focus on reliable device recovery mechanisms to simplify and standardize field operations for diverse appliances.As part of the Ubuntu Core team, you'll design and implement software for various CPU architectures, including ARM, RISC-V, and x86, working on boot mechanisms, bootloaders, storage layout, device trees, kernels, and services.Build a meaningful career with top tech professionals at Canonical, a growing international software company.Location : This role is remote within the EMEA region Write high-quality code with unit tests for new features Debug Linux system issues and develop fixes Collaborate proactively with a distributed team Review code from other engineers Discuss ideas and find solutions collaboratively Integrate diverse bootloaders and maintain gadget snaps Work remotely with global travel 2-4 times a year for events What we are looking for in you Passion for technology and collaboration with talented people Curious, flexible, articulate, and accountable Valuing soft skills; passionate, enterprising, thoughtful, self-motivated Bachelor's or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or similar Experience with C or Golang, Shell scripting Solid understanding of Linux, preferably Debian or Ubuntu Experience with Linux-capable devices like Raspberry Pi Interest or experience in low-level systems and security, e.g., bootloaders, systemd, Linux security features like TPM, FDE, LUKS, HSM Knowledge of Yocto is a plus What we offer colleagues Distributed work environment with biannual in-person team sprints USD 2,000 annual learning and development budget Annual salary review and performance rewards Additional benefits reflecting our values and local needs Recognition rewards, holiday leave, parental leave Wellness programs, travel opportunities, and more About Canonical Canonical is a pioneering open source tech firm, publisher of Ubuntu, and a leader in AI, IoT, and cloud platforms.
