The Ubuntu Software Engineer role at Canonical is a key position within our end-to-end Ubuntu Engineering organization. Canonical is a leading open source software company that builds and maintains Ubuntu, a widely used Linux distribution for enterprise, cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation and IoT applications. We are hiring engineers who are:- Dedicated to quality, performance and resilience.- Comfortable designing new software and packaging, integrating, testing and shipping the Ubuntu open‑source catalog. Teams Foundations – maintaining core software such as architectures, package managers, compilers, toolchains, bootloaders, filesystems and utilities. Server – leading the design and evolution of the Ubuntu Server distribution. Desktop – driving Ubuntu Desktop, including Ubuntu Core Desktop, WSL, gaming technology and modern Flutter applications. Debian Crafters – responsible for the forward movement, maintenance and overall health of the Ubuntu archive. Roles and Responsibilities Design, build and ship foundational systems software and applications in Rust, Go, Flutter, and Python. Engineer the integration of open source from boot firmware to cloud application deployment. Create and maintain packaging strategies that combine Debian and Snap packaging to ship software in the distribution. Build and maintain the automation engines that compile, test and ship Ubuntu. Maintain and evolve the Linux distribution and its repositories. Debug system‑level issues and deliver robust solutions. Author and improve technical and community documentation. Contribute to upstream and neighboring open source projects. Collaborate with a globally distributed team and mentor colleagues. Develop and improve processes to more efficiently fulfill our goals. Qualifications Exceptional academic track record. Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or an alternative path with a compelling narrative. Proven drive and a record of going above and beyond expectations. Passion for open source software. Significant experience with Rust, Go, Python, Flutter or C/C++. Professional written and spoken English. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to travel twice a year for company events up to two weeks each. Nice‑to‑Have Skills Experience with Linux distributions and distribution engineering. Experience with software packaging and distribution mechanisms. Understanding of build systems and toolchains, including cross‑compilation. Performance or security engineering experience.
