A Brief Summary of This Position: This position is an individual contributor responsible for structural analysis and design of products to be quoted and fabricated by the Valmont Utility Division, Steel Group, primarily of Utility transmission and distribution structures. Included in this is the full design responsibility for processing specific quotes and orders, general design engineering support for drafting and sales. The incumbent works on the Engineering Team who has responsibility for the design of products for quotation requests and orders. In addition, the incumbent plans, and monitors workflow of design activities to meet milestone dates for projects assigned. The Design Engineer willconsult with senior engineers on the team to ensure that customer specifications are met, and designs are feasible and efficient for manufacturing.Essential Functions:This position reports to site Engineering Manager/Supervisor and has no direct or indirect reportsAnalyze and design products by Finite Element Method (IMPAX design program) and other structural design software taking into consideration both public safety, manufacturability, and minimum cost (balancing competitiveness and profitability)Interpret customer specifications, customer needs, and market/sales needsCommunicate engineering data to the customer and others. The latter includes itemizing cost-related requirements of a quotation, including weights, reviewing engineering drawings and shop drawings, and evaluating as-built products.Support efforts of the Drafting team to assure that project requirements have been properly detailed and that order processing proceeds smoothly and rapidlyBuild and foster internal relationships and communications that will promote a professional attitude towards the work and the office environmentRecommend testing to confirm theoretical designs when necessary, including the planning and coordination of the testingCommunicate information about new ideas, product and system improvements, etc. to encourage increased morale and efficiencyAbility to travel up to 10% of the timeRequired Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):Bachelor's degree in civil engineering with 5+ years of relevant experienceTechnical competence in structural engineeringEngineer-in-Training CertificationWorking knowledge of 3D computer-aided design and Experience with Auto CADStrong communication skillsStrong teamwork skillsPassion and integrity with the drive to excel and deliver exceptional resultsHighly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:Master's degree in civil or structural engineeringThree to four (3 - 4) years of related engineering experienceProfessional Engineer (P.E.) in civil or structural engineering.A solid understanding of the end use of the product and the nature of design loads and their developmentPrior experience designing steel monopoles or industrial utility structuresPrior project team experience
