ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The Gender, Equality, and Social Inclusion (GESI) Specialist will lead the implementation of the Gender and Social Inclusion Analysis and Plan (GSIAP) in a project designed to protect and strengthen independent media in Central America.

The GESI Specialist's expertise will inform the ways in which the project integrates gender, equality, and social inclusion across all its aspects. The Specialist's strategic and technical advice will enable project staff to define and meet objectives on gender, equality, and social inclusion across all aspects of the initiative. The Specialist will work closely with other technical leads and the monitoring and evaluation team, partners, and other stakeholders to ensure that principles of gender, equality, and social inclusion are integrated into all aspects of the project's design, development, planning, monitoring, learning, evaluation, and implementation.

LOGISTICS

This is a fully remote role. Our ideal candidate is based in Costa Rica, Guatemala, or Mexico. Remote candidates based elsewhere in Central America will also be considered.

DAY-TO-DAY TASKS will include:

  • · Lead the implementation of the project's Gender and Social Inclusion Plan and the integration of gender, equality, and social inclusion perspectives and priorities throughout its activities, including those related to institutional strengthening, journalistic production, audience development and engagement, and holistic security, among others.
  • · Collaborate with the technical team on integrating GESI activities in technical assistance, grants, capacity-building efforts, trainings, plans, etc.
  • · Build the capacity of staff, partner organizations, and project participants to use a GESI approach and provide training, tools, and other resources to support mainstreaming of GESI methodologies across all programming.
  • · Provide guidance on engaging different marginalized and/or vulnerable groups in the design, implementation, and evaluation of activities, and ensure that these groups benefit equally and are represented through program activities.
  • · Evaluate GESI challenges within the context of the project and draft specific and context-driven sub-plans to address GESI concerns per activity in coordination with technical and/or programmatic leads as relevant.
  • · Develop communications materials that highlight the project's GESI approach (success stories, lessons learned, etc.) and support development of GESI-sensitive behavior change communication and messages.
  • · Review and contribute to program documentation for gender sensitivity and inclusivity (including research design, monitoring and evaluation (M&E) tools, assessments, annual work plans, programmatic reports, etc.).
  • · Work with the M&E Lead to identify appropriate GESI indicators and measurement methods to monitor and evaluate project outcomes related to gender, equality, and inclusion of underserved groups.
  • · Guide analysis of the project data from a gender, equality, and social inclusion perspective and devise strategies to address issues emerging from the analysis.
  • · Develop and maintain strong relationships with GESI stakeholders, especially within the media and civil society sectors in the region.
  • · Become familiar with Internews' GESI Strategy and participate in any related working groups or training to contribute to and learn from the organization's GESI culture.
  • · As relevant, liaise with donor GESI Advisors and Specialists.
  • · Any other duties assigned by the supervisor to ensure program success.
  • · Bachelor's degree or higher, preferably in human rights, gender studies, development, or a relevant social science OR equivalent lived/professional experience.
  • · At least seven years of relevant professional experience, including at least five years of experience in designing, managing, and implementing program activities to promote gender, equality, and social inclusion for donor-funded development programs in Central America.
  • · Experience in developing and delivering GESI-themed content in training materials as well as GESI-focused assessments, training, and organizational capacity-building.
  • · Experience working on GESI with USG-funded projects.
  • · Experience in leading GESI analyses and strategy development for organizations, media outlets, and/or development projects.
  • · Experience in research and data collection and analysis, with a GESI focus.
  • · Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • · Strategic thinking and ability to enable it across project stakeholders and partners.
  • · Excellent verbal and written skills in both Spanish and English.
  • · Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • · Ability to navigate politically sensitive subjects and maintain constructive relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders.

  • · Experience integrating GESI approaches in the Civil Society and Media sectors is highly desired.
  • · Knowledge of the Central America context.
