Responsibilities

The Staff Engineer: DevOps is responsible for deploying, monitoring and managing applications and services in different environments and at different stages of development. This includes the use of configuration management, Infrastructure as Code, API gateways, CI/CD, and application monitoring and alerting systems. Responsibilities will include the design or adaptation of our toolchain in collaboration with product and service teams and leads. The Staff Engineer: DevOps is required to work remotely with developers in different organizations; thus, adapting to different methodologies and technologies is essential.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Build and maintain modern enterprise infrastructures while prioritizing security and robustness
  • Provision, manage, and scale infrastructure to meet growing needs and ensure compliance with security and legal requirements
  • Implement and maintain efficient CI/CD pipelines for reliable software delivery
  • Collaborate with software engineering teams to define infrastructure and deployment requirements
  • Develop and maintain operational tools for deployment, monitoring, and analysis of AWS infrastructure
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues across various services and functional areas
  • Perform infrastructure cost analysis and optimization for improved efficiency
  • Keep documentation up to date and respond promptly to tickets and alerts
  • Monitor and ensure optimal performance of operational resources (e.g., K8S clusters, certificates, databases)
  • Provide stakeholders with regular reports on system health and performance
  • Foster a positive team culture, mentor engineers, and help execute growth plans
  • Work effectively in teams, resolve conflicts, and remove technology blockers
  • Develop documentation for solutions and contribute to a collaborative work environment

Requirements

  • Minimum 8 years experience in an engineering role (Dev, DevOps)
  • Proficiency in setting up, deploying, scaling, and managing containerized environments using Kubernetes in multiple environments
  • Strong experience in managing infrastructure projects using Terraform
  • Extensive knowledge of setting up, deploying, and managing various AWS services

Staff Engineers can mentor junior staff - Engineers and Associate Engineers - and provide on-the-job training through pair programming, code reviews, and similar collaborative activities.

Engaging Stakeholders

Staff Engineers can successfully engage clients and customers. They are able to lead scoping and design discussions and create solutions.

Technical Mastery

Staff Engineers have experience in many aspects of the product development lifecycle, from inception through design, development, testing, deployment, and support. They can demonstrate working knowledge of a range of technical areas and deep expertise in a few. They have strong problem analysis and solving skills with the ability to capture requirements and define implementation details.

Leadership

Staff Engineers provide leadership by taking responsibility for sub-systems and project phases. They are responsible for overseeing the tasks of Engineers. This oversight involves planning, estimation, resource management, issue resolution and quality assurance.

Tolerance of Continuous Change

Staff Engineers can function successfully in an environment characterised by its fast pace and high level of collaboration and are typically assigned to a single project at a time.
