OVERVIEW
The Welcoming Communities Program Officer will be part of USCRI’s Welcoming Communities Program, conducted in its Aguascalientes field office and implemented across Mexico. The program aims to create a new narrative regarding forced displacement and migration in Mexico. Through the mobilization of university campuses, this program has the objective to catalyze institutional capacities in the higher education system in Mexico to induce systemic change that leads to communities that are hospitable to refugees and conscious of the value of the cultural diversity that refugees and migrants bring. The Welcoming Communities Program Officer will be responsible to closely follow the activities of the student committee network within the program, focusing on their expansion, strengthening and capacity building, as well as everything related to mobility events on the university campuses. They will also provide support to the other components of the program (university network and refugee student committees). This position will report to the Welcoming Communities Program Coordinator.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinate, consolidate and follow up on activities related to the student committee network;
- Develop a strategy to raise the awareness of local communities regarding the fostering of welcoming communities through student committees;
- Reinforce the ability of student committees to be financially self-sufficient;
- Provide information on the participation of university students where there are student committees;
- Establish and maintain institutional channels of communication with academic points of contact;
- Support the capacity building of social service providers to undertake complementary activities for refugee students in their communities;
- Compile and draft content for social media regarding program activities, with the support of the communications team;
- Facilitate communication between student committees, USCRI Mexico staff, and other actors;
- Create audiovisual documentation of the events with student committees to include in reports;
- Maintain biweekly meetings with different student committees on their work;
- Organize committee meetings, leadership meetings, the intercultural mobility weeks and other events as required by the program; and
- Elaborate annual, in-person and virtual capacity building workshops for new recruits to the student committees.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution; Master’s degree in business, social services administration, non-profit management, related field, or equivalent experience preferred;
- Minimum of one (1) year of work or collaboration with student or civil society organizations, universities, international or government organizations regarding migration, human rights or vulnerable populations;
- Experience in group management, leadership groups and/or student associations;
- Experience in event organization, budget management and migration-related themes;
- Demonstrated commitment to humanitarian response, for refugees, immigrants, asylum seekers, and/or other vulnerable populations;
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to government funders, donors, clients from diverse cultural backgrounds and experience, multicultural staff, community partners, and volunteers;
- Exceptional time management, attention to detail, ability to multi-task and meet deadlines;
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, financial systems, and database programs; and
- Commitment to USCRI’s values including demonstration of respect for others and appreciation of a multicultural workplace;
- Must pass a criminal background check and other screening requirements;
- Demonstrated support of USCRI’s values by exhibiting respect for others, maintenance of confidential information and an appreciation of a multicultural workplace;
- Spoken and written Spanish and English is required.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
- Satisfactory completion of USCRI’s Orientation and Training; and
- Complete additional training as identified by supervisor or Human Resources.
**PHYSICAL DEMANDS**
- Use of manual dexterity, tactile, visual, and audio acuity;
- Occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds), bending, pulling, and carrying.
