Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

**Main purpose of job**:
The British Embassy is looking for a Trade Policy Support Officer who will provide support to the Trade Policy Team, assisting the British Government’s in its delivery of the United Kingdom’s Foreign Policy agenda overseas. By providing administrative, logistics and policy support, we are hoping to open up and develop new markets to deliver a sustainable future, create opportunities for British business and provide timely and valuable data to facilitate decision-making.

Trade and Investment is at the centre of the British government’s foreign policy. Reducing market access barriers, implementing our Trade Continuity Agreement (TCA) with Mexico, and engaging on talks on a new modern and ambitious UK-Mexico FTA, alongside the UK’s accession to CPTPP (Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership), are all priorities for the Embassy given their potential to open and expand markets for British products and services, while providing new opportunities for Mexico with the UK. Mexico is an important and growing partner for the UK and there is real potential to increase and diversify our trade and investment relationship over the coming years.

**Roles and responsibilities**

To support the Trade Policy Team by delivering administrative work for projects, policy support priorities and work on the logístical aspects of visits and events to ensure high quality outcomes.

**Policy support (40%)**:

- Lead and work as part of a team on research projects/requests, gathering and summarise information on Mexico’s and the UK’s key trade policy issues (market access barriers, Mexico’s Trade Policy, trade data, geopolitical policy decisions, etc...).
- Deliver timely and accurate policy analysis support to the teams.
- Support the Embassy’s Market Access work, including through supporting engagement with senior stakeholders (in UK and Mexican governments as well as high value business stakeholders)
- Support with the delivery of the trade policy team’s programme (ODA and non-ODA) portfolio.
- Directly support the UK trade agreements negotiating teams by providing accurate insights on the Mexican trade policy environment.

**Logistics and information Management (40%)**:

- Work on the logístical aspects of visits of senior UK government figures and key events to ensure high quality outcomes including Value For Money (VFM).
- Ensure visits run smoothly and participants give positive feedback on successful and well-attended events.
- Support the teams by developing objectives for, preparation of and providing read-outs of relevant meetings.
- Work with internal and external stakeholder to set-up bilateral meetings/events.
- Be the Trade Policy Team information management lead by managing the team’s digital repositories.

**Finance (20%)**:

- Monitor and manage the Trade Policy Budget.
- Give support for the administrative and financial processes (Claims, Payments etc.) to maintain a healthy level of performance, VFM achieving 100% expenditure and participate in meetings as the team’s Corporate Services Liaison.
- Monitor and manage team budgets to maintain a healthy level of performance by providing monthly updates to each team and matching real expenditure against profiled expenditure.
- Give advice on and pro-actively innovate and develop the team’s administrative processes and programme management.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in related field (Economics, International Trade, International Relations), or at least equivalent work experience.
- Have a good understanding and interest in key national & international policy and trade issues.
- Have excellent communication skills relating to relationship building both internally and externally to the British Embassy.
- Must be able to work with budgets and provide information in an understandable format to stakeholders.
- Excellent data management and analytical skills.
- Should be a proactive and creative self-starter with strong interpersonal skills who has the ability to learn quickly.
- Must be willing to work in constantly changing multicultural environments.
- Be able to adapt quickly to a dynamic working environment where requests can greatly vary.
- ** Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English and Spanish are essential.**

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
- Experience in managing budgets and finances is desirable.
- At least 1-2-year experience working in a similar role or related field.
- Good knowledge of Mexico’s most relevant trade data repositories.
