**Job Description/Responsibilities**:
This position (Plant Metallurgist) is within Caterpillars Advanced Material Technology (AMT) Division that provides metallurgical engineering and manufacturing support to the operations in East Peoria (KK) and Pontiac Illinois. The primary responsibilities of the Plant Metallurgist are providing oversight of the unique/proprietary heat treat equipment used to produce the complex gear and other powertrain components (100,000m-ton) used throughout Enterprise.
Plant Metallurgist is a management position within Caterpillars Advanced Material Technology (AMT) Division. The primary responsibilities of the Plant Metallurgist are providing oversight of the unique/proprietary heat treat equipment used to produce the complex gear and other powertrain components used throughout Enterprise. This supervisory position is responsible for all heat treat processes and metallurgical quality within the Caterpillar gear factory in Mexico.
This position will lead the Mexican Materials Technology organization as part of Caterpillar’s US-based Advanced Materials Technology division. Worldwide, the Advanced Materials Technology group has more than 400 employees in the US, UK, China, and India and is responsible for heat treatment of more than 100,000 tons of steel per year.
The Plant Metallurgist is responsible for safety, quality, cost and velocity for the heat treat department, and will work with other groups to ensure the success of the new facility. Cooperation with other functional groups both on-site and off-site, including Operations, Maintenance, Quality, Safety, Design Engineering, AMT, Global Purchasing, and Accounting will be required. The Plant Metallurgist is the single point of contact for all metallurgical / materials issues at the facility.
The Plant Metallurgist is responsible for strategy and execution of a successful heat treat department. This includes budgeting, cost saving and continuous improvement initiatives, quality, research and development strategy, metallurgical supplier interactions, supplier development, business resumption planning, and others.
In addition, the Plant Metallurgist will lead a staff about +10 engineers and technicians. The Plant Metallurgist will also develop and maintain the succession planning and new recruitment strategy for all metallurgical resources in the facility.
A successful Plant Metallurgist will have the ability to use technical metallurgical information to make business decisions. Communication, technical decision-making and analytical skills are crucial. Excellent communication skills (in both Spanish and English) are required.
The Plant Metallurgist may be expected to travel to the Midwest United States for extended periods of time (1 month continuous or longer) for initial training. The plant metallurgist’s travel requirements are expected to be 10% or less.
**Required Skills/Qualifications**:
- 10+ years relevant experience
- Strong leadership skills with previous experience leading technical personnel in a high velocity manufacturing environment.
- Individual must be self-initiated, and results focused with proven results
- Self-motivated, results-oriented problem solving and prioritization skills
- Prior experience in a technical problem solving role
- BS in Materials Engineering or Metallurgical Degree
- Excellent communication skills in Spanish and English (both conversational and technical)
- Ability to travel to the US for extended periods of time (1 month continuous or longer)
