Role Overview

We are seeking a Principal Java Engineer to lead the modernization and strategic evolution of enterprise-scale, mission-critical systems. This role is ideal for a senior technical leader who thrives in complex environments, has deep expertise in Enterprise Java, and brings hands-on experience modernizing legacy frameworks into secure, cloud-ready platforms.

You'll play a pivotal role in guiding architectural decisions, mitigating security risks, and shaping the future state of core platforms — while mentoring teams and collaborating closely with business and technical leaders across regions.

This is a fully remote role based in Mexico, supporting a high-impact, long-term modernization initiative.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the technical lead for enterprise Java applications, including systems built on legacy frameworks such as Apache Struts
  • Drive modernization initiatives to migrate legacy platforms to secure, scalable cloud-based architectures
  • Partner with stakeholders to define long-term technical strategy for upgrading outdated systems and resolving security vulnerabilities
  • Lead the design and implementation of enterprise integration patterns across complex ecosystems
  • Guide integration modernization efforts, including transitioning from batch-oriented workflows to more real-time architectures
  • Provide mentorship and technical leadership to engineering teams, promoting best practices in architecture, security, and maintainability
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams in both Spanish- and English-speaking environments
  • Ensure systems meet regulatory, operational, and compliance requirements within highly regulated industries

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant depth in Enterprise Java
  • Strong hands-on expertise with legacy Java frameworks, particularly Apache Struts
  • Proven experience migrating legacy systems to modern cloud platforms (AWS and/or Azure)
  • Demonstrated success modernizing applications to address security risks and outdated infrastructure
  • Strong architectural leadership experience within complex, tightly coupled enterprise environments
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Full professional fluency in Spanish and English, with the ability to clearly communicate both technical and business concepts

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working within regulated industries such as transportation, logistics, or aviation
  • Familiarity with compliance standards and operational constraints in enterprise environments
  • Experience integrating or modernizing systems within SAP ecosystems
  • Strong working knowledge of Oracle databases and enterprise tooling
  • Background in large-scale enterprise architecture and system integration
  • Highly valued: Experience with legacy IBM systems, including AS/400 and RPG
