About MAVI
MAVI places experienced finance and accounting professionals into senior, high-ownership roles at high-growth US companies.
We maintain a deliberately high bar on both sides of the placement. The companies we partner with are venture-backed and private equity-backed businesses building modern finance organizations, and the professionals we represent are operators with a track record of owning the numbers rather than supporting them from a distance.
The roles we place are embedded positions within the finance function itself. Our professionals work alongside founders, CEOs, and senior leadership on the work that determines whether a business can close its books with confidence, satisfy its auditors, raise its next round, and scale.
Our team has built and scaled finance functions at companies including Lyft, Ramp, and SoftBank. We remain closely involved throughout the relationship, from role alignment and interview preparation through onboarding, placement, and long-term career development.
The Role
We are seeking an accomplished Head of Accounting to lead the accounting organization of a high-growth US company, working remotely from Mexico.
This is the leadership seat for accounting as a whole. You will set the standards, structure, and roadmap for the function, and lead the managers and specialists who run the close, revenue accounting, and accounting operations day to day. Where the company is preparing for its next stage — a larger audit, a first-time SOX-style control environment, an acquisition, or a new international entity — you will make sure the accounting function is ready before it is tested.
You will report to the CFO or CEO and act as the senior accounting voice with auditors, the board's audit committee, investors, and department leaders. A significant part of the role is deciding what the function should become over the next 12 to 24 months, and then building it.
Because you will lead a team from outside the United States, the role calls for someone who operates with full autonomy, builds trust with US leadership quickly, and holds the technical standard of the function without needing a layer above to check it.
What You'll Own
Accounting Leadership and Strategy
- The function. Own the structure, roadmap, and operating standards of the accounting organization, including team design and hiring plans.
- The team. Lead, develop, and hold accountable Accounting Managers, Leads, and specialists across close, revenue, and operations.
- Accounting policy. Set and own the company's accounting policies and technical positions, and act as final reviewer on judgment-heavy matters. Financial Reporting and Technical Accounting
- The financial statements. Stand behind consolidated financial statements under US GAAP in front of leadership, auditors, investors, and the board.
- Technical accounting. Oversee conclusions on revenue recognition, leases, stock-based compensation, business combinations, and debt and equity instruments, with memoranda that hold up to audit.
- Consolidation. Own multi-entity consolidation, intercompany, and foreign currency across the group structure.
- Close performance. Set close cycle-time and quality targets and hold the team to them. Controls, Audit, and Readiness
- Control environment. Build a control environment that meets the company's next stage, including SOX-readiness where applicable.
- Audit. Own the external audit relationship and the audit plan, and resolve findings through to close-out.
- Transactions. Lead the accounting workstream for fundraising, M&A diligence, and post-acquisition integration.
- Tax coordination. Oversee US federal, state, and international tax compliance with external advisers, and the accounting inputs they depend on. Systems and Scale
- Finance systems. Own the accounting systems roadmap, including ERP, revenue, close-management, and AP automation.
- Process design. Design processes that scale with transaction volume, entity count, and headcount rather than breaking at the next stage.
- Business partnership. Work with FP&A, legal, and department heads so that accounting is involved before commercial decisions are made, not after. What We're Looking For
- 12+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership of a multi-layer accounting team with managers reporting to you
- Experience as the most senior accounting leader, or deputy to one, at a high-growth or complex company
- Deep command of US GAAP, including ASC 606, ASC 842, and ASC 718; exposure to business combinations (ASC 805) is an advantage
- Experience with multi-entity consolidation, intercompany, and foreign currency across international entities
- A track record of building or rebuilding an accounting function, including its policies, controls, and team structure
- Experience owning the external audit relationship, including audit committee or board-level interaction
- Substantial ERP experience with NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Microsoft D
