Position Overview:

The ideal candidate will spearhead a dedicated team focused on developing and executing assays to evaluate berry plant (strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry) responses to significant diseases and pests. This role is crucial for phenotyping plant reactions to key pathogens and pests affecting berry crops, aimed at characterizing both commercial and pre-breeding plant materials. Collaboration with breeding, applied research, entomology, and agricultural teams is essential for the successful planning and execution of multi-year research projects across laboratory, greenhouse, and experimental settings.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct Resistance Assays: Design and implement resistance assays following established protocols for critical pathogens and biotic stresses affecting all berry crops. Collaborate with the Host Resistance Senior Scientist to refine existing assays for emerging threats.
  • Team Management: Develop work strategies for the team, oversee daily operations, and coordinate efforts with breeders, applied researchers, entomologists, and agricultural staff to meet shared objectives.
  • Data Management: Collect, manage, and analyze data for precise reporting. Prepare comprehensive reports and communicate findings to senior scientists and collaborators, ensuring relevant observations inform ongoing analyses.
  • Independent and Collaborative Work: Drive projects forward autonomously or as part of a team, while enhancing knowledge of company processes and customer needs to maximize organizational synergy.
  • General Research Duties: Maintain high standards in plant pathology and entomology practices, ensure laboratory and field operations are well-managed, and undertake additional responsibilities as assigned.

Candidate Qualifications:
  • PhD in plant pathology, entomology, microbiology, or a related field with a minimum of 2 years of relevant industry experience, or a Master's degree with 5 years of experience in related areas.
  • Familiarity with molecular biology, bioinformatics, and high-throughput phenotyping is advantageous.
  • Experience with microscopy, microbiological techniques, and resistance screening for diseases and pests.
  • Ability to operate in laboratory, greenhouse, and agricultural environments, with knowledge of plant cultivation practices.
  • Strong attention to detail and demonstrated organizational capabilities.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively across various business functions.
  • Proficient in data management and analysis.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet company vehicle insurance requirements.
  • Willingness to travel for data collection and fieldwork as necessary.
  • Ability to work in diverse environmental conditions and physical demands.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and representing the company professionally.
  • Possession of a valid passport and readiness for occasional international travel.
