Plant Health Research Scientist

hace 2 semanas

Morelia, Michoacán de Ocampo, México Driscoll's A tiempo completo
Position Overview:

The ideal candidate will spearhead a team dedicated to designing and executing assays aimed at understanding the response of berry plants (including strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries) to various significant diseases and pests. This role is crucial for phenotyping plant reactions to critical pathogens and pests affecting berry crops, thereby aiding in the characterization of both commercial and pre-breeding plant materials. Collaboration with breeding, applied research, entomology, and agricultural teams will be essential in the planning and implementation of multi-year research projects across laboratory, greenhouse, and experimental field settings.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct Resistance Assays: Develop and execute resistance assays according to established protocols for key pathogens and biotic stresses impacting all berry crops. Collaborate with the Host Resistance Senior Scientist and team to refine existing assays for new or emerging threats. Perform inoculations, maintain plant health, and assess responses during trials.
  • Workflow Management: Create strategic work plans for the team, oversee team members, and ensure effective daily operations. Collaborate cross-functionally with breeders, applied researchers, entomologists, and agricultural teams to achieve shared objectives.
  • Data Management and Reporting: Accurately capture, manage, and analyze data for comprehensive reporting. Prepare timely reports and share findings with senior scientists and collaborators, highlighting observations that could influence analysis.
  • Independent and Collaborative Work: Drive projects forward by working autonomously or as part of a collaborative team, depending on project needs. Engage in host resistance research while enhancing knowledge of company processes and customer interactions to foster connectivity within the organization.
  • General Plant Health Expertise: Commit to excellence in procedures that support the goals of the Plant Health team, maintain research facilities, and undertake additional responsibilities as assigned.

Candidate Qualifications:
  • PhD in plant pathology, entomology, microbiology, or a related field with a minimum of 2 years of relevant industry experience, or a Master's degree with 5 years of experience in related areas.
  • Familiarity with molecular biology, basic bioinformatics, and high-throughput phenotyping is advantageous.
  • Experience with microscopy and microbiological techniques, along with screening for disease and pest resistance.
  • Ability to work effectively in laboratory, greenhouse, and agricultural environments, with knowledge of plant cultivation practices.
  • Strong attention to detail and proven organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively across various business units.
  • Proficient in data management and analysis.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal, with strong presentation abilities.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and eligibility for company vehicle insurance.
  • Willingness to travel for data collection from experimental sites.
  • Ability to work in challenging environmental conditions as required.
  • Physical capability to lift weights up to 40 lbs and navigate uneven terrain.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and proprietary information.
  • Professional representation of the company in all interactions with stakeholders.
  • Valid passport and openness to occasional international travel.
