The role necessitates a seasoned Materials Engineer adept in various material and electronic assembly technologies, alongside comprehensive testing methodologies. You will be responsible for coordinating and executing localized materials testing while collaborating with global material laboratories to uphold exceptional engineering services.

Key Responsibilities as Principal Engineer - Materials and Failure Analysis:

  • Advise and orchestrate suitable investigative procedures for failure evaluations, including result interpretation, reporting, and corrective action implementation.
  • Provide engineering consultancy on materials and associated production processes, including component teardown and laboratory testing to support both regional and global engineering and production teams.
  • Spearhead the establishment of a new Materials Laboratory in Monterrey, Mexico, focusing on laboratory layout and technical capabilities aligned with corporate R&D and customer requirements.
  • Formulate and enforce laboratory policies and procedures, ensuring adherence to ISO/IEC Quality and EHS standards.
  • Manage procurement of laboratory necessities within budgetary limits (maintenance, calibration, consumables) and develop cost estimates for current and future laboratory requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with the Northville Materials Laboratory to enhance lab efficiency and balance regional testing capacities.
  • Develop and implement policies to maintain a safe and organized work environment (5S principles).
  • Conduct teardown of mechanical and electronic assemblies to facilitate analysis while preserving critical areas of interest.
  • Utilize various analytical and testing techniques in the Materials Laboratory to address routine and complex customer inquiries.
  • Execute precise sectioning and metallographic preparation, specializing in challenging samples such as solder joints, printed circuit boards, and small components.
  • Deliver work of exceptional accuracy and craftsmanship.
  • Guide customers on appropriate investigative processes for failure evaluations, result interpretation, reporting, and corrective action implementation.
  • Liaise with other regional and global engineering and quality functions.
  • Generate comprehensive laboratory testing reports and participate in customer meetings as necessary.

Candidate Profile for Principal Engineer - Materials and Failure Analysis:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Over 8 years of professional experience in testing or quality organizations, including hands-on experience in laboratory testing environments.
  • Engineering experience in automotive electronic components is preferred.
  • Familiarity with test specifications from major OEMs and international standards (ISO, ASTM, SAE, CISPR, IEC, DIN).
  • Knowledge of electronic assembly processes for PCBs and electronic materials.
  • Understanding of metals (casting, forging, sheet steel, welding) and polymer materials.
  • Practical experience with metallographic techniques.
  • Experience using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and other non-destructive analytical techniques (training will be provided as necessary).
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects effectively.
  • Strong understanding of budgeting and capability to develop business cases for operational and capital requirements.
  • Proficient in English, both written and spoken.
  • Occasional local and international travel may be required.
