Detailed Description of the Project:

As an IoT Solutions Intern, you will contribute directly to the Smart Operations initiative — Cemex´s global program driving the digital transformation of manufacturing and operational processes across cement, concrete, and aggregates facilities.

Smart Operations integrates cutting-edge technologies such as edge computing, smart sensors, computer vision, artificial intelligence models, and robotics, positioning the team as a key enabler within the organization. Through these innovations, we aim to increase operational profitability, enhance resource efficiency, and strengthen the physical safety of our employees.

Project Objective

As an intern within the Solutions Architecture Department, you will join a global team responsible for designing and implementing digital architectures that support strategic industrial projects. Our mission is to ensure the long-term reliability and scalability of these solutions by developing robust mechanisms that allow seamless deployment across multiple plants and countries.

Project Description

Challenges for the student

  • Proactivity and Integration: Demonstrate initiative by actively engaging in the day-to-day activities of the Smart Operations team, progressively understanding internal processes, tools, and methodologies. (Soft Skill)
  • Strategic Understanding: Develop a strong conceptual grasp of IoT and Edge Computing, enabling the ability to make informed and strategic decisions regarding task execution and system design. (Strategic Soft Skill)
  • Technical Mastery: Strengthen hands-on skills in Linux, MQTT,

Main Responsibilities and Activities to be Carried Out

  • Evaluate IoT Platforms and Services: Test and compare multiple IoT and messaging platforms such as MQTT brokers, Kafka brokers, Azure IoT Services, and LoRaWAN network servers, providing well-documented results and recommendations.
  • Validate System Connectivity: Perform end-to-end connectivity tests between edge and cloud components, ensuring reliable communication and interoperability.
  • Automate Routine Processes: Develop and deploy custom Python scripts or automation tools to streamline manual activities such as bulk registration, modification, or management of device signals (PLC or sensor data).
  • Operate and Improve Legacy Software: Learn and enhance the use of existing Windows-based applications required to interface with specific industrial equipment, contributing to process optimization and standardization.

Required Qualifications

  • Proficiency in at least one scripting language (Python preferred).
  • Basic knowledge of Linux environments (commands, bash scripting, file management, etc.).
  • Understanding of containerization concepts (Docker).
  • Familiarity with industrial and messaging communication protocols such as MQTT, Modbus, OPC, and Kafka.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience using data frameworks such as Pandas or working with CSV datasets.
  • Fundamental understanding of Kubernetes (manifests, deployments, pods, etc.).
