Job OverviewThe Legal Group Manager is a senior management-level position responsible for accomplishing results through the management of a in coordination with the Legal team. The overall objective of this role is to provide legal support, advice, and guidance across a broad range of practice areas, with respect to the local laws and regulations of the country or countries for which the role is responsible.
This role leads a team of lawyers providing guidance, support, and legal advice on Citi's businesses and functions in COUNTRY/GEOGRAPHY. This role requires thorough understanding of the strategic direction of the Business, combined with a solid conceptual / practical grounding in the laws and regulations of the geographies in which we operate. Provides input into strategic decisions, exercising sound legal judgement to develop proactive, risk-appropriate, and commercially practical business-oriented solutions. Management responsibility of a team, including management of people and planning.
Responsibilities:
- In coordination with Country Counsel team, provides legal advice and support to the Country Business Management on legal, control function and regulatory matters associated with Citi's business activities and legal entities in the countries covered; ensures that Citi is appropriately addressing legal, regulatory, franchise and reputational risks in these countries
- Supports strategic initiatives of the businesses and functions in countries covered by providing subject matter expertise and interpretations of relevant laws, rules, regulations, and industry practices, and advising business management on legal matters impacting the business
- Manage a team by providing guidance, evaluating employee performance, compensation recommendations, promotions and supporting personnel-related matters, as applicable
- Responsible for coordinating the provision of internal and external legal support to Citi's local businesses in COUNTRY/GEOGRAPHY, working closely with the relevant Regional Product Counsel (or his or her designee) to ensure that Citi's legal needs are met in a cost‐effective manner
- Develop a broad understanding of Citi's businesses in the COUNTRY/GEOGRAPHY and of the major legal and regulatory risks facing those businesses
- Ensures business decisions are made with appropriate legal insight by applying institutional knowledge against industry standard, widely accepted business practices, laws, rules, and regulatory guidelines, escalating as appropriate
- Collaborates across internal lines of business and control/support functions to achieve coordinated and efficient outcomes on matters of common interest; coordinate closely with Legal team members, as appropriate
- Advise (or arrange for the provision of legal advice by other internal or external counsel to) business management on legal and regulatory risks affecting Citi's businesses in the COUNTRY/GEOGRAPHY, as well as franchise and reputational risks, to help ensure that Citi is appropriately addressing those risks
- Provides legal advice to Citi Country Officers and country management to support Citi's maintaining of good relations with local regulators and all other local regulatory bodies that are relevant to Citi business activities
- Assures that key legal and regulatory developments that may impact or otherwise be relevant to Citi's businesses in the country, including those involving other financial institutions, are appropriately monitored and that business management is apprised of significant developments
- Takes an active role in any relevant country‐level or cluster‐level governance committees as assigned, e.g., coordinating committee, business risk & controls committee, legal & compliance committee, legal vehicle management committee; act as lawyer providing support to the country in any matter.
- Manages day-to-day legal activities as a subject matter expert in area of responsibility and provide senior advisory services to business partners
- Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency, as well as effectively supervise the activity of others and create accountability with those who fail to maintain these standards
Qualifications:
- 10+ years of specific relevant industry experience, preferably in financial services; prior management experience preferred
- Excellent leadership, interpersonal, organizational and relationship management skills
- Excellent command of local languages
- Proven ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously in a demanding, fast-paced environment
- Comprehensive knowledge of international, multi-jurisdictional laws and practices while staying abreast of regulatory and legal environment, internal policies and industry trends that impact the business
- Effective communication and negotiation skills and ability to build and maintain trusted relationships
- Membership of local Bar/ Lawyers Association
Education:
Juris Doctorate or equivalent law degree
Indispensable abogado (Título y cédula).
Experiencia en temas de crédito, financiamiento, créditos estructurados, créditos de real estate y/o derecho corporativo.
Deseable experiencia en sector financiero.
Conocimiento en regulación sistema financiero.
Indispensable manejo de inglés avanzado.
Liderazgo y manejo de equipos de trabajo.
