Job Title: Legal Advisor, LAC (EN-8) Organization Unit: Programme Reports To: Regional Representative, LAC Supervises: This position does not supervise staff. Location: Remote. Candidates residing in Mexico will be given preference, due to regional programmatic needs, language capabilities, and time‑zone alignment. Mission Objective The Legal Advisor, Latin America and the Caribbean, supports Equality Now’s regional work by applying legal expertise and advocacy skills to advance gender equality in law and strengthen access to justice for survivors of and gender‑based violence and discrimination. The Advisor contributes to the design and delivery of campaigns across the region, conducting legal research and analysis, drafting advocacy tools, and supporting litigation strategies before national, regional, and international mechanisms. By engaging directly with civil society partners, coalitions, and government stakeholders, the Advisor helps identify advocacy opportunities, builds collaborative strategies, and ensures regional perspectives inform Equality Now’s global priorities. The role strengthens movement‑building in the LAC region by amplifying survivors’ voices, supporting capacity development of partners, and advancing coherent, evidence‑based advocacy for legal and policy reform. Portfolio Overview The Legal Advisor contributes to the design and delivery of all LAC campaigns aimed at advancing access to justice in cases of sexual and digital violence, prohibiting harmful practices, and eliminating discriminatory family laws and procedures. Major Duties and Responsibilities Purpose: Apply Foundational Knowledge Leads the development of legal and advocacy strategies on violence against women, in alignment with international and regional human rights standards. Identifies opportunities to drive systemic change through regional and international legal frameworks, including the Inter‑American System and UN mechanisms. Maps clear legal and advocacy strategies for campaigns, including the coordination of legal research, regional consultations, and the production of advocacy materials and thought leadership products. Provides legal analysis and strategic litigation support, including co‑litigating or coordinating legal teams in regional or international forums. Drafts or contributes to submissions to UN Treaty Bodies, Universal Periodic Review, and other global/regional mechanisms. Drafts and contributes to Equality Now’s reports, legal briefings, and strategic communications to support legal reform and accountability. Develops and conducts legal training for partners on international and local/regional human rights standards relating to women’s rights, legal equality, and gender‑based violence. Engagement: Knowledge Building & Collaboration Supports the LAC team in strategy development, planning, budgeting, and monitoring campaign efforts across LAC. Advises internal teams on context and campaign developments in LAC through internal meetings and program dialogues. Collaborates with regional and global Communications teams to align legal messaging with campaign communications. Represents Equality Now in regional coalitions, conferences, legal forums, and advocacy spaces. Maintains regular engagement with national authorities and relevant agencies through formal correspondence and in‑person meetings to promote campaign objectives. Develops and sustains relationships with legal actors, partners, and civil society across the LAC region to enable joint advocacy and knowledge exchange. Strengthens the capacity of partners through legal technical assistance and coordination of regional learning events among stakeholders in Equality Now’s LAC campaigns. Delivery: Operational Awareness & Action Supports the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of LAC campaigns. Tracks deliverables and work plans for partners and consultants in the region. Provides regular input to regional donor reporting and programmatic updates on activity results and changing contexts. Contributes to the development of high‑quality program strategies, legal submissions, and campaign materials. Ensures legal interventions and advocacy outputs meet Equality Now’s standards and align with regional program objectives. Supervises consultants, fellows, and interns; ensures effective contribution and alignment to project goals. Supports monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) processes by collecting and synthesizing evidence on campaign efficacy, challenges, and adaptations. Position Requirements & Target Skills Profile Substantive Knowledge Deep knowledge of legal systems and policies affecting women’s rights and survivors of gender‑based and sexual violence, and discrimination in family law across the LAC region. Strong grounding in gender justice, with attention to systemic barriers and survivor‑centered legal remedies. Applied expertise in intersectional feminist frameworks for advocacy, movement‑building, and programming. Experience engaging survivors and applying survivor‑centered approaches across diverse communities, including Indigenous, Afro‑descendant, migrant, and disabled populations. Litigation experience before the Inter‑American System or UN mechanisms is highly desirable. Familiarity with donor reporting and coordination of program deliverables. Communication Skills Native‑level fluency in Spanish; professional fluency in English required; Portuguese desirable. Adept at fostering cross‑cultural collaboration and cultivating trust‑based relationships consistent with the mission and values of Equality Now. Excellent drafting skills across legal, policy, advocacy, and analytical formats. Skilled facilitator with a proven ability to convene and build trust across diverse stakeholders. Strong interpersonal, listening, and conflict‑resolution skills, grounded in collaboration and inclusion. Represents Equality Now with professionalism and cultural fluency in high‑level forums and multi‑stakeholder spaces. Contributes strategically to programmatic discussions, translating complex issues into actionable advocacy. Collaborates across international offices to ensure coherence in cross‑border initiatives. Applies intercultural awareness and language skills to deepen impact and strengthen partnerships. Experience using social media to respond to current events, share legal analysis, and highlight advocacy campaigns and public engagements. Execution Skills Demonstrates organizational, planning, and MEL excellence, with a strong results‑driven approach. Proven capacity to coordinate and implement legal research, litigation, advocacy, and training initiatives across multiple countries. Manage partnerships, coalitions, and legal networks to ensure alignment, accountability, and consistent delivery. Design and execute multi‑stakeholder projects and advocacy campaigns with analytical rigor and strategic foresight. Ability to synthesize complex legal, social, and operational inputs into clear, actionable strategies. Support the management of end‑to‑end project cycles, including contracts, budgets, consultant agreements, and detailed activity plans. Monitor milestones, risks, compliance requirements, and adaptive learning processes to ensure high‑quality execution. Ability to contribute to cost planning, donor reporting, and performance monitoring for multi‑country initiatives. Highly organized, agile, and responsive to shifting geopolitical, programmatic, and organizational priorities. Operates effectively both independently and within cross‑functional, multicultural teams. Provides clear direction, structured delegation, and constructive feedback to build accountability and support professional growth. Willing and able to travel internationally and domestically, sometimes on short notice, to support regional teams, engage partners, and represent Equality Now. Targeted Specialized Knowledge Bachelor’s degree in law required; advanced degree (Master’s or equivalent certification) required strongly preferred. 6+ years of progressively responsible experience in gender justice, GBV, human rights, or legal advocacy; demonstrated experience engaging with Mexico’s legal, policy, or advocacy landscape preferred. Professional experience in national or international law, international human rights, gender studies, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent academic background. Demonstrated experience supervising staff or consultants, with a track record of mentoring, coaching, and delegating effectively to support team development and accountability. Compensation At Equality Now, our compensation philosophy reflects our commitment to advancing the human rights of all women and girls through lasting legal and systemic change. We approach pay holistically, recognizing base salary as one component of a broader total rewards package designed to support well‑being, growth, and long‑term engagement. Base Salary Range: $25,259 – $40,926 USD.
