Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

The British Embassy is seeking to recruit a Communications Manager as Deputy Head of Communications and Public Diplomacy. This is a dynamic role within the high-performing Press and Communications Team (PCT) which works to ensure that the UK achieves maximum positive media coverage in line with British Government objectives and the Embassy’s Communication Strategy. The job holder will be responsible for designing communications strategies for teams across the Embassy; supporting with press events, campaigns and other communications, such as press releases and media reports; building strong working relationships with the media; and producing analytical media reports. The job holder will work closely with His Majesty’s Ambassador. The job holder will also support the Head of Communications and Public Diplomacy to lead and manage PCT.

**Roles and responsibilities**:
Working closely with the Head of Communications and Public Diplomacy and the wider team, the jobholder will be responsible for:

- Designing and implementing **communications plans for teams** across the Embassy (e.g. colleagues working on commercial and development issues), supporting those teams in the organisation of events, press handling, developing media products (such as press releases, press conferences, and social media content), and generating media reports. This includes supporting different cross-Embassy projects and the GREAT Britain campaign. The job holder will act as the comms lead for several priority policy areas.
- Coordinating and developing **communications products for the Ambassador, other senior Embassy staff and high-level visitors**, such as interviews, Op-Eds, articles, etc, adapting content to best land with our audiences in Mexico.
- Developing a **strong network of specialised medi**a, including sector mappings and PR strategies, and establishing direct contact with editors, reporters and other relevant stakeholders.
- Leading the team’s **media reports**, including the production of a quarterly activity report and an analytical Annual Media Report. The job holder may also be required to produce special analytical media summaries, for example, during elections periods or relevant political developments.
- Supporting the Head of the Team in activities related to the team’s organisation, including identifying learning and development needs for the team and wider Embassy. This will include delivering a yearly Comms Week to upskill colleagues across the Embassy in press and communications.

Throughout many of these activities, the jobholder will collaborate closely with teams across the Embassy (e.g. Political Section, Commercial Section, Development Section, Consular Section); partners in Mexico; and UK government press and communications officers in London and the wider UK government network.

The Embassy has developed an extremely strong digital presence and the jobholder will also have the opportunity to contribute with original content for our permanent communications channels, as well as providing advice on the Ambassador’s weekly column.

This is an interesting and varied role, with lots of opportunities to support the wider team and Embassy to deliver innovative communications and support our soft power objectives. All staff are also expected to support the Embassy’s wider corporate environment.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

**Essential on arrival**:

- Undergraduate degree or equivalent professional qualification in communications, marketing, journalism or similar.
- Professional experience in media communications or PR, including of implementing effective communications campaigns.
- Excellent written and spoke English and Spanish.
- A good understanding of the Mexican media, as well as relevant knowledge and interest in local news and international affairs.
- Good interpersonal and communications skills, including stakeholder engagement skills to build strong working relationships with colleagues within the UK government network and externally.
- Excellent organisational and self-management skills to respond effectively to deadlines and priorities.
