Job Overview
The Train Operations Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the movement of trains and engineering teams while functioning within the Line of Road (LOR). This role adheres to established protocols as outlined in the General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR) and the Train Dispatcher Manual. The primary responsibility of the dispatcher is to ensure the safe and efficient transit of trains, minimizing delays through effective management. Utilizing advanced computer systems and radio communication, the dispatcher maintains constant contact with crews and manages the secure movement of trains across the Kansas City Southern network, taking prompt action in the event of incidents.
This position requires exceptional analytical abilities to navigate a variety of tasks and procedures. The ideal candidate will generate innovative solutions to complex logistical challenges and suggest enhancements to existing processes, aiming for standardization and consistency in the execution of the Transportation Service Plan.
Key Responsibilities
Direct and manage railroad traffic, issue authorities, and operate signals remotely from the Network Operations Center (NOC). Monitor all train movements and maintain digital records of delays. Familiarize with assigned territory and keep leadership informed of any changes or challenges affecting schedules and movements. Communicate with train crews regarding weather or environmental conditions impacting train operations and adjust plans accordingly. Oversee computerized train control systems. Operate controls for track switches and traffic signals, applying and removing blocking devices as necessary. Report any violations of operating rules and irregularities in train movement. Plan ahead for the smooth transit of priority trains, including those carrying hazardous materials, to avoid unnecessary delays. Coordinate track usage with Engineering Department personnel. Provide timely information to Terminal Supervisors regarding train arrivals. Exhibit operational excellence by understanding and applying business requirements, demonstrating customer focus and effective contingency planning. Understand relevant business metrics such as gross velocity and train length, applying strategies to maintain operational effectiveness. Identify violations of rules or policies and engage in accountability discussions with individuals not meeting expectations. Foster a culture of teamwork and inclusion by utilizing strong communication and interpersonal skills. Clearly define team roles and responsibilities, holding individuals accountable for achieving objectives and recognizing high performance. Develop and maintain a strong team of high achievers, creating a rewarding work environment and organizing team-building activities. Required
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, preferably in a relevant field. At least five years of relevant operational experience or a combination of education and experience. Ability to clearly communicate and comprehend operating and safety regulations, demonstrating superior judgment and problem-solving skills. Strong aptitude for utilizing information systems in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment. Must be adept at multitasking. Ability to distinguish colors on video displays for safety-sensitive tasks.Preferred
Experience in the transportation industry, particularly in railroads, military, or air traffic control. Familiarity with Management Control Systems (MCS) and Train Management Dispatch Systems (TMDS). Qualified under GCOR/RIT standards. Proficiency in English to facilitate advancement opportunities.Working Conditions
Shift work is essential, requiring flexibility to support critical railroad operations 24/7. On-call responsibilities are integral to this role, necessitating readiness to respond to operational needs at all hours. Minimal travel may be required, up to 10% of the time.Benefits
