About the role:

The Director of Public Affairs for Damco Spain SL will be responsible for legislative and regulatory issues as well as community relations in close cooperation with our business managers. The position will be based in Mexico City, Mexico with expected regular travel activity. Report will be to the Head of Government Relations for North America, with a dotted line to the Managing Director of APM Terminals, Mexico and Country Manager of Maersk, Mexico.

In this role, you will:

  • Direct the company's policies and objectives involving federal, state, and local government relations. Timely resolve of business issues involving government and authorities within Mexico. Where relevant, provide timely advice and forward-thinking solutions to business managers.
  • Track legislation and engage, as necessary.
  • Overall lobbying responsibility to protect the interests of Damco Spain SL.
  • Maintain and nurture relationships with key legislators, staff members, agency representatives, professional organizations, and port authorities to protect and positively influence Damco Spain SL's legislative, regulatory, and reputational interests in Mexico, as coordinated with the Head of U.S. Government Relations North America.
  • Assist with the establishment of corporate strategies, policies, and plans.
  • Assist APMT senior management team with labor relations, as/if necessary.
  • Develop and maintain local community relations, including but not limited to residents and environmental groups.
  • Ensure that key internal stakeholders are consulted and kept well-informed of potential threats and opportunities.
  • Represent Damco Spain SL in selected professional organizations and associations.
  • Manage lobbying firms, as applicable, and as agreed with Head of U.S. Government Relations North America, with focus on maintaining adequate Damco Spain SL flexibility, options and confidentiality – and firm control of costs.

What you bring:

  • The ideal candidate should have 8-10 years of government relations and/or maritime transportation experience.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree. Political Science, economics, or law preferred.
  • The personal maturity to develop and maintain professional relationships with business colleagues, policy makers and authorities, based on trust and the pursuit of business results for mutual benefit.
  • Strong communication and public speaking skills, as well as excellent writing skills.
  • The sense of urgency required to reach timely results for business.
