About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Regional General Counsel to lead our legal team in Latin America. As a key member of our global corporate Law Department, you will provide strategic oversight of our legal work in the region and represent our interests in Latin America.

Key Responsibilities
  • Regulatory Interaction: Develop and maintain relationships with local regulators in Chile, Colombia, and Mexico, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Legal Management: Oversee the provision of legal services to our expanding operations in Latin America, including direct insurance, reinsurance, compliance, employment, and commercial transactions.
  • Office Setup Assistance: Assist with the setup of new office locations in Latin America, coordinating with our corporate headquarters and supporting our expansion initiatives in the region.
  • Governance: Ensure the effective provision of corporate secretarial services and related governance functions for our Latin America operations.
  • Contract Management: Provide strategic input on the drafting, review, and negotiation of agreements with producers, insureds, and third parties.
  • Transactional Matters: Manage regional corporate transactional matters, including entity formation, due diligence, securities, and financial matters.
  • Dispute Management: Provide strategic oversight and direction on the resolution of non-claims disputes impacting our Latin America operations.
  • Support Underwriting Teams: Work with our Latin America underwriting teams and product development to support new transactions and product lines.
  • Miscellaneous: Handle other corporate and contractual matters as needed, requiring regional approaches and perspectives.
  • Legal Counsel: Stay up to date on legal, compliance, and regulatory issues impacting our business in Latin America.
  • Operational Leadership: Provide leadership to local operational areas supporting our Latin America underwriting business and contribute to wider projects involving Latin America operations.
  • Strategic Advice: Provide strategic business and legal advice regarding potential strategic acquisitions, M&A, new ventures, and territory expansions affecting our Latin America business.
  • People Leadership: Lead and manage a team of 4 direct and indirect reports.
  • Board Membership: Serve as a member of the Board of Directors on each Latin American subsidiary of our corporate group, at the direction and pleasure of the shareholders of each subsidiary.
Requirements
  • Legal Qualification: Admitted to practice in Chile, Colombia, or Mexico with 10+ years' relevant experience in a law firm or in-house role focusing on insurance-related matters in Latin America.
  • Management Skills: Ability to lead an in-house legal department, with at least 5 years' experience in a managerial role.
  • Bilingual Abilities: Full professional bilingual abilities in English and Spanish are a must.
  • Regulatory Experience: Preference for candidates with experience in the regulatory environment of Chile, Colombia, or Mexico, covering other local markets in the region.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Effective interfacing with all levels of management and both internal and external constituents.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong organizational skills, analytical ability, and excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Work Ethic: Strong work ethic, ability to self-manage, and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Pressure Management: Ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple projects and priorities in a dynamic and developing environment.
  • Judgment and Attitude: Common sense, good judgment, and a solution-oriented attitude toward legal issues.
  • Entrepreneurial Approach: Ability to approach complex legal issues with a sense of entrepreneurialism.
