Position Overview:

This role is integral to the Underwriting Support career path and may report to a Senior Specialist, Team Leader, or Team Manager within the Underwriting Support Unit. The Underwriting Assistant is an essential contributor within the product field operations, expected to enhance their expertise in underwriting support processes, risk assessment, and operational drivers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage complex accounts while providing technical support to junior staff, operating under moderate supervision.
  • Collaborate with regional underwriters and senior support staff throughout the processing of new and renewal business. Assess submissions for completeness and communicate outstanding items to underwriters for review.
  • Work closely with underwriters and CoE partners to create customized solutions.
  • Identify and resolve account alerts during the submission process to prevent conflicts.
  • Upon receiving underwriting instructions, forward specific lines of business to Shared Services for rating.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in underwriting systems through training.
  • Conduct data analysis, prepare referral documentation, and manage checklist approvals. Responsibilities may include:
    • Reviewing location data and CAT modeling results for accuracy.
    • Analyzing loss data and financial statements to aid in quote development.
    • Assisting with the issuance of quotes, binders, policies, endorsements, and cancellations within set timelines.
    • Requesting individual policy filings as necessary.
    • Preparing policy writing instructions for Shared Services and managing premium billings.
    • Overseeing bureau critiques on assigned accounts and following up with brokers on outstanding information.
    • Preparing documents for reinsurance quotes.
  • Conduct post-issuance policy reviews and document discrepancies for discussion with senior team members.
  • Assist underwriters with broker follow-ups on outstanding subjectivities and update systems accordingly.
  • Monitor premium booking and policy issuance to ensure compliance with LOB metrics, escalating issues as necessary.
  • Apply knowledge of LOB underwriting rules for pre-analysis support of submissions.
  • Communicate account status to management or underwriters to ensure completion of necessary items for policy issuance and premium collection.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date files for all accounts in line with internal service standards.
  • Participate in broker or client meetings as required by underwriting.
  • Consistently meet service level agreements regarding volume, accuracy, and quality.

Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years of relevant insurance experience or equivalent education and experience.
  • Ability to manage multiple systems effectively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Willingness to learn from experiences and adapt to new situations.
  • Strong client servicing skills with a proactive approach to anticipating needs.
  • Problem-solving abilities to identify issues and propose suitable solutions.
  • Attention to detail to ensure accurate documentation.
